- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 medium sweet onions, roughly chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar

HOW TO MAKE HOT FRENCH ONION DIP
Carmelize the onions
- Coat a pan with olive oil and heat over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add in the onions. Let cook and stir every few minutes. After about 10 minutes, add in the sugar. This will help with the caramelization process. Add a splash of water if needed to prevent the onions from drying out. After about 20-30 minutes, the onions should be a rich brown color (as shown above).
Assemble the dip
- Preheat the oven to 375F.
- Combine the cream cheese, sour cream, carmelized onions, garlic, 1 cup gruyère cheese, and salt and pepper to taste.
- Spread the mixture evenly in an 8×8 baking dish. Top with the parmesan cheese and remaining gruyère cheese.
- Bake for 15 minutes, then broil for a few minutes until the cheese is browned and bubbly.
- Serve with crackers or French bread.
